When ”thinking and choosing green” here are three key elements to consider:

Sustainable Materials – means materials that are renewable resources (Bamboo and cork are examples)

Recycled Materials - these save natural resources from being used (rubber often has recycled content)

Eco-friendly – they are products made with less chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s)

Bertazzoni Ranges

It seems to me more and more, even in high end homes, the kitchen is being integrated into one of  the main gathering places to enjoy food and festivities. Especially in these tough economic times I believe people find it comforting to connect with their family and friends in the kitchen, partaking in delicious food and drink.

All the more reason to have a range that is a showpiece as well as producing fantastic cooking results. Bertazzoni has risen to the challenge of incorporating beauty and function to answer the call of this lifesyle.

Bertazzoni literally has a range to suit any style; contemporary, transitional and traditional. I chose the 48″ Heritage Series for my own kitchen.

Wood Stone

If you are planning a custom home design, remodel or redesigning your outdoor cooking space you will want to consider adding a Wood Stone oven.

I recently learned more about the product at a Ferguson Showroom seminar for designers and other professionals. I was truly impressed by this product, especially because I like to cook and entertain.

Here’s some of what Wood Stone has to say about their product:

NOT JUST A PIZZA OVEN

Although Wood Stone has built its reputation on making the “best” pizza oven in the world, it’s not just a pizza oven. Imagine roasting chicken and duck’ searing meats and fish, braising stews and poaching pears; baking comforting casseroles; roasting vegetables in just minutes to hold in vitamins, creating texture and flavor. Begin your day with fresh scones, frittatas and baked eggs. Roast asparagus and shallots for your pasta and as the sun goes down, have a holiday feast with rack of lamb and a perfect berry crisp or baked flan.

This is one of the many design options.

Protecting Your Mattress and Pillows

Most of us have heard the commercials for dust mites. Did you know that protecting your pillows and mattress with covers can trap allergens keeping them away from you? It is a great way to reduce the bedroom allergen exposure level. Mite droppings and cast skins are among the most common triggers of asthma and allergy symptoms.

I specify Private Quarters for many of my clients and also use them myself. There are no chemicals or pesticides used in their products. They are affordable and luxurious.

Choosing the Finishes

When planning your remodel or custom home it is important to choose the finishes for the home at the early stages.  After the styling and color palate is chosen, then begins the task of choosing all the elements that go into your home room by room. The more details you can nail down in the beginning the better. It is important to carefully plan and outline the choices detailing patterns and specifications for the contractor.

Sleep Facts

Adequate sleep is important for optimal mental performance.

70% of adults don’t get their required sleep.

You can tell if you are sleep deprived if you need an alarm clock to wake you up.

Woman have more nightmares and are more prone to suffer from insomnia than men.

It is common for premenstrual women to sleep less and experience tiredness, irritability, confusion and depression.

If you are finding that you toss and turn for one hour every night it is like the equivalent of missing a whole night’s sleep each week.

More than 50% of adults report thermal incompatibility in bed with their sleep partner.

So…..how does one get a better night’s sleep???

Room temperature should be set at or below 68 degrees F.

Go to bed and get up at the same time daily.

Plan on 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.

Exercise regularly during the day and keep mentally active.

Avoid chocolate (my downfall), caffeinated beverages and alcohol for at least three hours before bed.

Your bedroom should be clean and clutter free.

Warm baths shortly before bed can help.

Eat a balanced diet.

Avoid sleep aids.

Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and free of distractions from the TV or pets.

Quit smoking.

Build a luxury and comfortable bed of your dreams with products chosen for your specific likes and dislikes.

Painting

I receive a daily email from Mamasource, a website for Moms who want to connect and ask questions. Today I read this question from a Mom:

Hi Moms! Has anyone painted red and blue (think Mickey Mouse colors – we found the room paint idea brochure at Home Depot in the Disney paints) It is red on the top third of the room and blue on the bottom two thirds. I think it looks so cute! His room is cars and trains theme so the colors will go. My question is – is this too dark? He has one window that is fairly large but I’m worried the dark colors will make the room dark and gloomy plus feel smaller. Any advice?

Ths was my response:

I am an interior designer and I have a few points for you to consider:

- cool colors like blue do make the walls recede
- warm colors will make it seem smaller and cozier
- dark colors are difficult to paint over
- dark colors tend to burnish unless you use a eggshell or higher sheen, which I personally do not like for walls
-red is an invigorating color so do not use too much of it in bedrooms
-blue is calming so that is good for sleeping
-borders in rooms are outdated.
-I like the idea one reader had about feature walls
-other thoughts are to bring color in with fabrics and/or to paint the furniture in colors, which can be fun and a great way to make old furniture look good
-consider lighter hues of the colors for the walls and the deeper tones for other items in the room…..accessorize.

Hope this helps others with similar painting concerns!
